Each artist is given the same twelve by twelve panel and asked to reinterpret an album cover in whatever medium they work in. Painting, embroidery, sign lettering, spray paint, tattoo ink.

The finished pieces go up face out on rails, three rows of ten, across several areas of Albina Press, a cafe in Northeast Portland. Not hung like paintings. Racked like records, so you walk along them rather than stand back from them.

The uniform format is doing all the work. Wildly different practices become legible as one show because every object is the same size and shape.

Bobby Adams is a painter and curator in Portland. He started The LP Show in 2024 after Amy Rowan of A Sometimes Gallery asked him to fill her space, and it has grown every year since.

He caps the size deliberately. Large enough to feel like an event, small enough that one person can still curate it rather than administer it. Alongside The LP Show he runs the Art Bar series and curates for Collector Bar.

Do it in your own hand, but if someone knows the original they should be able to identify it easily. That is the entire brief.

Artists almost always pick records that already overlap with how they work. A sign painter took Morrison Hotel and painted only the signage. A tattoo artist did Illmatic with a tattoo gun fitted with a ballpoint pen. Bobby took Portishead, hard edged and monochrome, because it sat exactly where his own painting already lives.
